Ghana’s Black Starlets have qualified for the quarter finals of the ongoing under-17 FIFA World Cup in India.
The team beat their Nigerien counterparts in a round-of-16 fixture by two goals to nil to book a date with Mali in the next stage. The match was played at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.
Ghana’s goals were scored by captain of the side, Eric Ayiah, who converted a penalty in extra time of the first half.
He secured the penalty before going on to convert. In the 80th minute Ayiah got another chance to double his tally from the spot but failed.
Nine minutes later, Richard Danso, who had joined the action only five minutes prior wrapped up the game after scoring Ghana’s second.
In the other round of 16 fixture, Brazil dismissed Honduras by an emphatic three – zero result to also progress. The Ghana team thrashed hosts India 4-0 last Thursday to finish top of Group A ahead of Colombia and USA. Niger lost 2-0 to Brazil in their last game but a 1-0 win over North Korea in their opener gifted them three points, just enough to secure passage to the last 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams.
