2017 Women’s AfroBasket: Nigeria off to winning Start with Victory against Mozambique

Nigeria led in the first half, taking the first and second quarters with pretty slim margins; 21-19 and 20-13.

The third quarter was no different. The two-time champions edged their dogged opponents by just two points 18-16, and shared the board in the fourth quarter 21-21.

It was a keenly contested game and though Mozambique’s Leia Dongue topped the points leader’s board shooting double figures; 19 points, but 4 Nigerians registered double figures as well.

Adaora Elon, Ezinne Kalu, Evelyn Akhator and Sarah Ogoke were all ruthless on the board scoring 17, 16, 13 and 11 points in that order.

In other group B games, defending champions Senegal blew out Guinea by 66 points with the final scores at 105-39.

Another impressive game on Day 1 saw Egypt, who presented the youngest roster, dominate DR Congo winning 99-72 points.

Nigeria next face DR Congo on Saturday at the Palais des Sports Salamatou Maïga in Bamako.
